The Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) is a widely used screening questionnaire developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is designed to help adults identify signs and symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The ASRS consists of a series of questions that focus on key aspects of ADHD, including inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive functioning difficulties—such as trouble organising tasks, following through on instructions, or managing time effectively. Individuals are asked to rate how often they experience specific behaviours over the past six months, using a simple frequency scale ranging from “Never” to “Very Often”.

This tool is not a formal diagnostic instrument but rather a screening aid. It helps individuals and clinicians determine whether the symptoms may be consistent with ADHD and if further comprehensive evaluation is warranted. The ASRS is often used in both clinical and non-clinical settings, including GP surgeries, occupational health assessments, and mental health screenings.

Importantly, a high score on the ASRS doesn’t confirm a diagnosis of ADHD—but it can highlight patterns of behaviour that merit a more detailed assessment by a qualified healthcare professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist. Early identification through tools like the ASRS can be crucial in getting timely support, treatment, or workplace adjustments.
